A voice spoke behind Lyra and they both felt a chill fall over them. Lyra turned around, knowing what she’d see and dreading it despite her bravado.
“You’re my death, en’t you?” she said.
“Yes, my dear,” he said.
“You en’t going to take me yet, are you?”
“You wanted me. I am always here.”
I am on the third book of Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials trilogy. Titled ‘The Amber Spyglass’, this is is not as good as the previous two but it is still enjoyable non the less. I love the idea of daemons as a physical representation of your soul and I have ofter wondered what form mine would take. I am at the part where Lyra and Will arrive at the world of the dead and discover that every living person has a death in the form of a person who is always with you and whos purpose is to help you when the end comes to guide you through this land. Some people, like ourselves in this world choose not to see them as we are fearful and out of courtesy they stay out of sight. “Whenever you look, they hide. They can hide in a teacup. Or in a dewdrop. Or in a breath of wind.” I find it a comforting idea that no matter how alone one feels, your daemon and death are always there.
