The Shrewton Railway Line

After a not so enjoyable stint in the office this morning, I relaxed in the company of friends as we ignored the weather and fired up the BBQ whereby we proceeded to burn meat purchased from the local farm shop. Whilst waiting between the burger and sausage round we got talking to an elder gentlemen whom we’ve never met before and it wasn’t long before the conversation turned to the recent move to the village.

Now this chap had obviously lived in the area all his life and I really enjoyed listening to his local tales whist the host balanced as much meet on the grill as possible and hoped he was quick enough at picking them off the floor so that nobody notices. Anyway, the guy then asks us whether we’ve seen our village’s railway line. This is a rather odd question I thought as Shrewton doesn’t have a station or a line running through it. On answering, I was advised to take a trip out to the garage in the village and look down.

I took the old foldy out when we returned and this is what I saw.

It would appear that the kerb comprises of old railway lines, rivets and all and they run for a short distance out of the village. What a fantastic find, its amazing what one misses when they don’t look down. These were put here during the First World War to prevent the early tanks ripping up the pavement as the passed through and this stretch is the only part that survives today.
