Today, although the weather was gloomy we ventured out to walk the old route of the light railway which linked Larkhill with Amesbury back in the day. This line was used to transport troops to the camps and although pulled up in the 30’s, the route the trains took can still be walked.

Old platforms can still be found in and amongst the undergrowth. I wonder how may soldiers disembarked here?

We were surprised to discover that the route of the railway line is marked by apple trees which after conducting some further reading once we returned home, are rumored to have grown from the apple cores discarded from the troops’ carriages.

Hi Jez
Are those apple trees lining the footpath? i.e. can you get to the apples?

You sure can and theres plenty. It looks like not many people do help them selves judging by the mountain of fallen apples at the base of the trees.
