Sheltering From The Rain

It was raining again yesterday so I took refuge in the cathedral. Sometimes in situations like these I just like to sit quitely and soak it all in, so finding myself a secluded spot away from the tourists I observed. It wasn’t long before I was spotted by one of the elderly guides that shuffle round the place and without invite started telling me the story surrounding the tomb I was sitting opposite.

To tell you the truth, what he was telling me was actually quite interesting. How it came to be where it was, how the height of the tomb was raised a couple of hundred years later and how the engravings that decorated the lid were removed by the Parliamentarians when they took up camp in the cathedral during the civil war.

I was also informed that the cloisters were also used as an area for target practice during this time with the bullet holes still visible today after all this time. On my way out I took a moment to find the peppered wall and thought how odd that they now hang memorials to fallen locals in the World Wars.
