Caen Hill Locks Once Again

Its extremely muddy wherever one ventures at the moment due to the grotty weather we’re having. Not a problem when you have welly boots and an off roading Phil & Teds push chair. Today we introduced little Charlie to a place we visit quite often, Caen Hill Locks (you can read a previous visit here). Its an impressive flight of 29 locks built in a time when they were needed to help boats scale the hill in Devizes. Now that Whitworths are all too familiar with narrow boating, we look at the flight in a different light, thinking of the effort it would take to navigate this wonder.

Once back at the top we caught a glimpse of newly cut logs, stacked in regular piles further along the tow path. We also caught a glimpse of a random bloke with his wheelbarrow. After sparking up a conversation about wood burners, he very kindly lent up his barrow and Charlie made his way home in the back of the car surrounded by piles of logs with a nervous dad fearing the worst when mum takes a corner a little too quick. Very pleased to say we all made it home in one piece and next years wood collection for our stove has got off to a great start.
